Split Multichannel drum track to individual tracks

I think I am figuring this out on my own as I go but I'll pose the question anyway. I experimented with creating a single 6 channel track to record all of my drums. It seemed to me that it could be easier to do rough editing than having individual tracks. But now I am discovering some potentially unintended consequences. For instance when normalizing the track it seems to locate the loudest peak on any of the channels and normalize to this point rather than for each separate channel. Also using the new transient guide markers seems to have a similar behaviour. So this seems like a bit of a failed experiment.

What is the most efficient way to split out my channels to separate tracks?
