How to open indivudual midi item?

Hi there,

I cannot seem to open an individual midi item in the midi editor. Whenever I double click a midi item, it opens the midi editor, but somehow it seems to open the whole track (even if there are no other midi items behind the one I clicked on). It is difficult to describe, but once the playback (in the sequencer!) moves behind the midi item, my midi notes scroll out of view in the midi editor.
How can I just open the midi item I click on, and not the whole track?
