Midi timing and sample accuracy?

I have some midi in cubase and want to port it into reaper in a fashion where the timing remains sample accurate. How does the midi timing work in reaper? Is every midi item tied to the sample grid so that the first tick in the item corresponds to the next sample? Or is there a global midi timing grid?
