In certain cases, Reaper won't open ASIO device until playback is started

I have RME UCX, didn't test with other devices.

This happens when I start Reaper while the UCX is unplugged or if I unplug the UCX while Reaper is running.
Reaper then throws the error about ASIO device missing and then shows "asio device closed" in the device bar (the thing in the upper right part of the window).

When I connect the device, the "asio device closed" writing remains.

This made me think that Reaper couldn't access the ASIO driver and I tried to troubleshoot but to no avail. Even switching to another driver produces the same result (tried directx, waveout and WASAPI).

Until I simply clicked "play", and that immediately solved it. However this same thing happens again as soon as the initial conditions are met (Reaper running, device unplugged and then plugged in).

However this happens only when the project I'm working on is open. If I test with a new unsaved empty project, Reaper shows device info in the device bar as soon as the UCX is connected.

Tested with a portable installation and the same thing happening there.

The UCX is properly recognized by the OS and the driver and remains functional at all times (when connected to the machine). I am 100% certain that it is working well.

This is not affected by changing the default Windows output device to the built-in soundcard, having no other programs output sound etc.

Win7 x64, Reaper x64 v5.23 (happened also in previous versions).

Thanks!
