I play e-drums (Roland TD-11KV), sending MIDI over USB to DAW and using Acoustica Studio Drums VST to generate sound.
When I play the same pad (i.e. the same note) relatively fast (actually, even 8 beats per second is enough), VST randomly skips / ignores some notes, turning simple rolls in some unexpected rhythm patterns.
Other VSTs I tried do not have this issue (so far those are MT Power Drum Kit, Sean Paddy Drums). But I really prefer the sound of "Studio Drums", so don't want to give up on it yet.
The issue is not present when I alternate between two different pads (notes). So, say, blast-beat (bass-snare-bass-snare-...) is ok, but double-bass (bass-bass-bass-bass-...) turns into something like bass-bass-bass-pause-bass-bass-pause-bass-bass-bass-bass-pause-...
I tested it in couple of other DAWs, problem is exactly the same in Mixcraft and Sonar as it is in Reaper.
Of course, potentially conflicting settings like quantize / auto-correct overlapping notes are OFF - that was first thing I checked before trying other DAWs and writing to Roland support and only then finally trying other VSTs lol
Has anyone came across similar problems with VST? Studio Drums seem to be quite a professional package, if you judge by the samples, so I think it's unlikely for it to have such a huge issue. May be there's some MIDI incompatibility between these two - Roland module and specifics of how it generates MIDI data, and Acoustica VST?
I noticed that other VST I tried so far seem to have more "normalized" sound. Particularly the kick, it sounds to me like what used to be frowned upon as "triggers" on acoustic drums? Those that make all the bass drum notes sound the same. May be this "normalization" is the reason these VST do not have problem, unlike the more "sensitive" one? (Or may be I'm unfair to other VSTs and I just became so used to the glitches that normal dynamics sound too normalized to me? lol)
I might ask on Acoustica's forum, since its their VST and they might know something, but checking with a big MIDI community first.
