MIDI Editor: What do the dots in the channel filter indicate?

Curiously, the forums and the manual seem to be quiet on this feature: What do the dots next to the channels in the MIDI editor's channel filter list indicate?

I expected that the dots would indicate the channels that are being used in the track, but this does not appear to be the case
